How to Pin on a Boutonniere (and other tips for Homecoming Flowers)

Think back to your high school prom. What was the most awkward part of the night? Sure there was some awkward conversation and crazy dancing, but, really, it was probably the pinning of the boutonniere. But don’t worry; we’ll save you the embarrassment this time around. Learn how to pin a boutonniere and try these other tips to make the homecoming flowers work for your teens.

How to Pin on a Boutonniere in 3 Easy Steps:

1)      Position the boutonniere. With the flower facing front, place the boutonniere just below the widest part of the lapel on your date’s left side (which is actually YOUR right).

2)      Pin from the back of the lapel. Holding the boutonniere against the lapel with your left hand and use your right hand to push the pin from the back of the lapel and through, then over the stem of the boutonniere and back through the lapel.

3)      Step back and admire your work! Take a step back and make sure it sticks. Admire how good he looks with that boutonniere.

To make sure all your homecoming flowers are a success, be sure to order early and coordinate them with your son or daughter’s date. Don’t be afraid to get creative with the flowers you choose! Roses are a classic look, but consider using something different. Orchids, hyacinths, delphinium, or even everlasting Sports Roses (with petals handmade from game ball materials) can make a stand-out boutonniere.
