DIY How to make a baseball softball leather keychain

By Mark Ellingson

In this week’s DIY tutorial, I will show you how to make a stylish and durable keychain out of a real baseball or softball. This craft is easy to moderate in difficulty and will take you about 1 hour to complete your first time.

Supplies Needed:

  • 1 Baseball or Softball (you can make 2 keychains per ball)
  • 1 Key Ring (ideal diameter is 1.25″-1.5″)
  • 2 Yards of Red Embroidery Floss (Medium Red Color)
  • Box cutter or razor blade
  • Scissors
  • Embroidery Needle
  • Optional: Leather hole punch
  • Optional: Necklace Cord/Chain (to make a necklace instead)

Step 1:

step 1 how to make a baseball softball keychain

Use a box cutter to cut the stitches along the seam of the baseball. Be careful not to cut the baseball leather or your fingers. Carefully pry up the leather at the seam and remove from the ball core. Don’t force this step because it can cause one of the stitch holes to break. You may need to retrace the path a second time with the box cutter if you have difficulty separating the leather from the ball. Once the leather halves are off the ball, remove the existing red string.

Step 2:

For keyrings that are at least 1.5″ in diameter and using baseball leather, insert the leather through the keyring and fold the leather in half. When making a keychain using larger softball leather or keyrings that are 1.25″ or smaller, you will need to punch two holes at the mid section of your ball leather and thread the keyring through the 2 holes.

Step 3:

Step 3 How to Make Baseball Softball Keychains

Cut a 2 yard length of red embroidery floss and thread onto the needle. Tie the end of the thread opposite the needle to the hole at the midsection of the baseball/softball leather closest to the keyring. Repeat to create a strong knot. Fold the two halves of the leather together, making sure the holes on each half line up. Choose a side of the leather to be the front when you hold it. Bring the needle & thread from the front side, around the seam on the edge, and insert the needle into the matching whole on the back side of the leather. Position the needle in a downward angle to find the next unthreaded hole on the front side and bring the needle through. Pull the needle and thread tight.

Step 4:

Repeat threading each hole until you reach the last hole on the other side of the keychain. Tie a knot around the final hole. Repeat the knot 2 more times to make sure it is secure then cut off the excess thread (leaving about 1/2″-1″). Use the eye of the needle to tuck the excess thread in between the too leather halves to conceal it.

Congratulations! You’re Done!

Add your keys and enjoy your new keychain. You can also make a pendant necklace using these steps except add a chain or cord instead of a keyring. Another creative twist on this idea is to use colored balls or photo balls to make your keychain unique.

DIY – How to Make a Softball and Baseball Shirt

Show off your love for softball or baseball with a simple, stylish t-shirt that you can make on your own in 30 minutes for less than $10.

I recently came across this idea by Chelsea on Pinterest. Aside from the cool softball/baseball-themed design, I was really attracted by how easy it looked to make. I went to my local craft store to pick up the few supplies it required. Using my 40% off coupon, my receipt total for the shirt and fabric marker was only $6. The rest of the supplies were easily found in my house and I would expect that most households (especially ones with kids will have scissors, pens, rulers and cereal boxes). I made a few of my own modifications to the original instructions since I found a few steps to be unnecessary and I had some new ideas to enhance the shirt design.

Here are the supplies you’ll need:

  • Yellow or White T-Shirt (optionally, you can also use a tank top)
  • Red Fabric Marker
  • Cardstock (a cereal box will work)
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Ruler (optional)
  • Red Fabric Glitter (optional – for embellishing design)
  • Iron-On Letters/Numbers (optional – for personalizing shirt)

Step 1:

Cut a circle out of the card stock. I recommend creating a 12″-14″ diameter circle, use a plate for a more accurate shape. This will be used as a guide to trace the curve for the softball/baseball stitch design on the shirt.

Step 2:

step-by-step-instructions-to-make-softball-baseball-shirt-4Lay shirt flat on a table and smooth out any wrinkles or creases. Place another piece of cardstock inside the shirt to prevent the marker from bleeding to other side of shirt. Place the circular cardstock guide on the shirt in upper left corner and trace out the design with red fabric marker. Make sure to hold the fabric firm to prevent any creases from forming while you trace the design. After tracing out the design, remove the guide and touch up any areas that need extra paint applied. Now repeat on lower right corner of shirt. Optional: You can also copy this design to the back side of the shirt. If you choose to do this, make sure the front and back side designs connect.

Step 3:

Add the angular stitches along the path you created in Step 2. You can freehand the design, but I found it easier to use a ruler to keep the pattern even. Add a stitch every inch along the curved path and make each one inch in length on each side of the curve.

Step 4:

Let fabric paint dry and then toss in the dryer for 30 minutes. That’s it! How easy was that? Your shirt should look something like this when complete.

Optional Embellishments:

  • Add some sparkle to your shirt with three dimensional fabric glitter paint. Just trace over the stitch design.
  • Personalize your shirt with a name and/or number with iron-on transfers

  • Customize your shirt with different shirt and fabric paint color combinations (make sure that the shirt color is lighter than the marker color)
  • Try this design out on a tank top shirt design

Football Rose Arrangement Ideas: Turn Snack Helmet into a Vase or Planter

November 20, 2014 Leave a reply

nfl and ncaa snack helmets available here

Throughout the year, I’m constantly searching for products that complement our Sports Roses arrangements.

Recently Wincraft introduced the Snack Helmet. The Snack Helmet is licensed for all NFL teams and over 50 NCAA teams. I ordered a few samples to get a closer look at the quality and size of the snack helmet.

I was really impressed with detail of each snack helmet. They are close to the size of a real helmet and feature high-quality team logo graphics and colors to replicate the helmets worn by players. Included with the helmet are 2 plastic bowls to hold snacks. One large bowl placed in the center and a smaller tray with 2 compartments that fits into the face mask.

Although the snack helmet is marketed as a snack & dip holder, I thought it would make a unique vase/planter to display Football Roses. I ordered some samples and put together a couple arrangements as a birthday and wedding gift for a few special friends. They LOVED it!
